The Global Visionary Women's Network, Federation of Ghanaian Diaspora in Europe and National Council of Ghanaian Unions of United Kingdom on Friday commended President John Dramani Mahama for the bold step in appointing a woman as Chairperson of Electoral Commission.

"We highly commend President Mahama and the Government of Ghana for continuously demonstrating their commitment to gender equality especially in high level public office appointments," the group stated in a statement copied to the media.

The statement was signed by Naa Tsotsoo Soyoo I, who serves as Matron, Global Visionary Women's Network; Secretary General Federation of Ghanaian Diaspora in Europe and Director, National Council of Ghanaian Unions UK.

The group also congratulated Mrs Charlotte Kesson-Smith Ama Osei on her appointment as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

"The first woman to hold that position...This is a significant achievement indeed and we in the Diaspora pledge our full support to help her achieve the objectives of her office," the statement said.

According to the statement Mrs Osei joins a unique tall group of powerfully competent women such as Hannah Tetteh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration; Nana Oye Lithur, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection who are serving creditably in government.

"As she takes on this challenging role, we call on the population to refrain from the irresponsible and sometimes misogynistic comments and attitudes that often follow appointments of females to high office," the statement stated.

Naa Tsotsoo Soyoo I is also a Divisional Queen mother of the James Town Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area.
