NPP UK backs calls for Inquiry into Vickileak saga

NPP UK backs calls for full blown Judicial Inquiry into Vickileak saga

NPP UK has been following with keen interest the revelations on a tape allegedly made by Victoria Hammah, in the company of a female companion in which she was heard vividly describing her influence, that of Nana Oye Lithur, Tony Lithur and their connections with the judges in the recent Supreme Court Petition. The revelations on the tape are so damning that it pales to insignificance her own avowed aim to make a million dollars before quitting politics.
Our statement in support of our party's call for judicial Inquiry is based on the clear allegation the voice, which is purported to be that Victoria Hammah is heard clearly suggesting how powerful and influential Lithurs are and the fact that Nana Oye Lithur may have influenced the Supreme Court verdict. On the Vickileak, she is heard saying:
“You want to fight Oye Lithur. Tony Lithur controls three Ministries. That Rachel is not wise…Tony Lithur has been the friend of the Rawlingses, been a friend to the President John (Mahama), now and his wife. I learnt even before the verdict, Nana (Oye Lithur) was with the Justices and all that. You don’t know the role she has played for us to win the court case. Then, you want to use your lack of intelligence to push her out…Tony Lithur and John Mahama, they’ve got an alliance. They are allies, you understand. They defend each other. Rachel, who do you have?”
This statement in the Hammagate above is the crux of the revelation that requires nothing less than a full blown judicial inquiry by the Chief Justice. The allegation casts a serious aspersions on the judiciary and calls to question the principle of independence of the judiciary in our democratic dispensation. It also puts into question whether the government did not have direct impact or influence on the judiciary.
In the wake of the recent call by the Chief Justice that Ghana needs men of integrity, this is a test of her resolve to ensure there is integrity in her own institution. We therefore stand shoulder to shoulder with our party in Ghana to call on the Chief Justice to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.
