NDC Canada Salutes Ghanaian Workers on May Day

May 1, 2011

Today is May Day and we, members of the National Democratic Congress, Canada Chapter (NDC Canada) wish to salute and give thanks to the millions of workers across Ghana.

We recognize your contributions to the development of our country and you are also the driving force and the backbone of our stable economy.
We know the past few years have not been easy for Ghanaians. Inflation was sky-rocking, the TOR debt has quadrupled, cocaine, armed robbery and other crimes have been on the rise and the cedi was falling fast against other major world currencies. In addition to the above, Ghana has also gone through some of the worst economic crisis in recent times due to the reckless and irresponsible spending of the previous government. During this same period, we also witnessed some of the questionable foreign acquisitions and takeovers in our country leading to the demise of state institutions such as the Ghana Telecom, Ghana Water Company, Ghana Airways, etc., leaving some of our nation’s workforce redundant and unaware of where help will come from.

Despite these challenges, the Atta Mills-John Mahama led NDC government has remained resilient and committed to putting the interest of Ghanaian workers first. In just two years, this administration has brought the country’s inflation under control; it has fully paid the escalating TOR debt, something the previous administration did not do despite collecting millions of Ghana cedis in surcharges instituted by it for the sole purpose of paying down the TOR debt. The NDC administration also fully paid the numerous contractors who were not paid for contracts executed during the previous administration. Furthermore, the NDC administration is currently in the process of bringing all government workers under the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) which is expected to end by September this year.
On this May Day, whilst we salute the Ghanaian workforce, let’s all re-dedicate and commit ourselves to ensure equal opportunity, justice and fairness for all Ghanaians. We must eschew all forms of unpatriotic and criminal activities that negatively affect the development and progress of our country.
LONG LIVE GHANA!!!
LONG LIVE GHANAIAN WORKERS!!!
LONG LIVE THE NDC!!!

Signed
