Dr. Akabutu Named One Of 100 Edmontonians Of The Century

The Ghana High Commission in Ottawa is proud to announce that Dr. John J. Akabutu, its Honorary Consul General with jurisdiction for Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, has been named one of the 100 Edmontonians of the century.

Dr. Akabutu, a leading hemophilia specialist, was one of the 100 personalities selected by the City of Edmonton from a shortlist of more than 900 nominees in connection with events commemorating its centennial.

A professor emeritus at the University of Alberta, Dr. Akabutu founded the Alberta Cord Blood Bank as well as the department of pediatrics at the Cross Cancer Institute, and is considered one of the pre-eminent Edmontonians to have made lasting, significant contributions to the betterment of the city.

Speaking about the honour done him, the Honorary Consul General stressed that his selection should be seen as an honour not only for him and his family but also to his heritage. He observed that his award is proof of the capability of Ghanaians to chalk high achievements in the very competitive environment of Canada.
