Buffalos, Accra Warriors set early pace in rugby seven?s

The rugby season in Ghana got underway in Accra last Saturday with eight teams competing in the maiden seven aside league being put together by the Ghana Rugby Association (GRA).

Eight games were played at the athletics oval of the University of Ghana with the level of play very interesting on the first weekend of action.

After the first two games in the league, two teams, Accra Warriors and the Cosmos Buffalos hold a hundred per cent record and will be looking to extend their dominance further when the league resumes at the end of the month.

Cosmos Buffalos opened their campaign with a 12 ? 0 points win over Idas Sports Rugby Club and made it two wins out of two after accounting for Titans 10 ? 0 in what was expected to be a keenly contested affair.

The outstanding performance of the Buffalos, were marched by the Accra Warriors who posted back ? to ? back wins over Ketu Lions 12 ? 0 and another 14 ? 5 points win over the Accra Sharks to move level on six points with the Buffalos on top of the league.

On three points after two games are, Idas Sports Rugby Club, Dansoman Hurricanes and Titans of the University of Ghana after each winning one and losing the other of their games.

After losing to the Cosmos Buffalos in their first game, Idas bounced back strongly to beat Dansoman Hurricanes 15 ? 0 to stay in contention for the ultimate. Hurricanes had earlier accounted for the Accra Sharks 29 ? 0 in their opening game.

Titans opened their account with a comprehensive 27 ? 0 points win over Spartans who offered very little opposition to the vastly superior Legon boys.

With one point on the log are Spartans and the Ketu Lions who played out a pointless game to close the first weekend of action in the league.

Yet to register a point are the Accra Sharks who lost all their games, conceding 43 points and getting five on board and will need to re-double their efforts if they hope to mount a meaningful challenge to the title this season.

The 2012 rugby seven?s league is being put together by the GRA with support from Nurevas Foods Ghana Limited, Clifton Homes and Savanna Springs Mineral Water as sponsors for the competition.
