Commodity prices close week mixed

Commodity prices closed mixed in the week to Friday, a GNA survey in major markets in Accra and Tamale has shown.

The survey showed that while the prices of some commodities were up, others were relatively stable in the two markets in both Accra and Tamale.

For instance, in the La market in Accra, the survey revealed that prices of commodities such as vegetables, tuber crops including yam, legumes and cereals had gone up.

The price of a paint rubber container of onions is currently going for GH¢50.00, compared to last week’s price of GH¢ 40.00.

A big basket of Garden eggs this week is GH¢90.00 as against GH¢80.00 last week, while a tuber of yam goes for GH¢5.00 to GH¢8.00 compared to GH¢3.00 and GH¢5.00 last week.

A bunch of plantain is also sold at GH¢30.00 compared to last week’s GH¢25.00, whiles a small basket of cocoyam is priced at GH¢10.00 compared to last week's price of GH¢8.00.

At the Tema Station in Accra, the prices of commodities such as garden eggs, onion, pepper, yam, and millet saw slight increases on Friday compared to last week.

A paint container of garden eggs which sold at GH¢7.00 last week is going for GH¢8.00 this week.

One paint container of red dried pepper which was sold last week at GH¢13.00, is now going for GH¢15.00.

Also, a bowl of millet which was sold last week at GH¢5.00 is now selling at GH¢ 6.00 this week.

A tuber of yam is also up at GH¢3.00 from GH¢2.50.

However, prices of beans (the Burkina variety), which last week went for GH¢7.00, while the Niger variety of the commodity which was sold at GH¢12.00 remained unchanged in the week.

A bunch of plantain is still selling between GH¢ 7.00 and GH¢ 8.00 depending on the size.

At the Agbogloshie Market, the price of plantain has increased with a bunch going for between GH¢20 and GH¢30 up from between GH¢15 and GH¢20 the previous week.

Six fingers of unripe plantain are going for between GH¢5.00 and GH¢7.00 up from GH¢3.00 and GH¢5.00, depending on the size.

The story is not different at the Nima market where tomatoes, garden eggs, onion, pepper, yam, beans and millet all saw slight increases in price on Friday compared to last week.

For instance, last week, a paint container of onion was sold at GH¢14.00, but this week it is going for GH¢20.00.

A paint container of garden eggs which sold at GH¢6.00 now goes for GH¢7.00, while dry pepper which sold at GH¢12.00 last week now sells at GH¢15.00.

A paint container of tomatoes which sold at GH¢8.00 last week is now going for GH¢10.00. However, prices of food stuffs like, fresh pepper, soya, maize, gari and plantain were unchanged.

At Madina Market, prices of foodstuffs such as Tomato, Onion, Pepper, Beans, Millet, Maize, Yam, Plantain, Garden Eggs, Cassava, Cocoyam, and Gari, have seen a slight increase this week.

Four fingers of plantain go for between GH¢2.00 and GH¢4.00, depending on the sizes. A paint container of garden eggs which sold at GH¢7.00 last week is now selling for GH¢10.00.

Three big tubers of yam which went for GH¢15.00 last week now sell at GH¢18.00.

A paint container of onion was sold at GH¢14.00 the previous week but is now selling at GH¢16.00. A paint container of pepper is sold at GH¢10.00.

At Kaneshie Market prices of some food stuffs have remained stable whiles others are witnessing an increase.

A paint container of tomatoes has been selling at GH¢12.20p since last week, with a bowl of onion going for GH¢10.00.

At the Dome Market, a paint rubber of onion is sold at GH¢20.00 while a bowl of beans goes for GH¢12.00, with a bunch of plantain selling at GH¢14.00.

A paint container of garden eggs has also maintained its price at GH¢10.00 since last week.

At the Aboabo and the Tamale Central markets, prices have remained unchanged over the week.

The price of three tubers of yam has remained at GH¢8, while the prices of millet and beans have also maintained their previous levels this week.

A bowl of tomatoes is being sold at GH¢15.00 while Onion is going for GH¢25.00.

Groundnut is selling at GH¢7.00 per bowl, while a bowl of wheat sells at GHC10.00.
