Dwamena finds ‘sizeable’ love

Ngozi is a popular Nigerian name meaning Blessing and Michael Dwamena feels blessed for getting Ama Charles to feature with him in a video based on the Ngozi song from his new Owo Moti album.

The video has been running on television since last December and viewers seem to like the song in addition to admiring the fleshy Ama. Dwamena is now having a horrid time everywhere he goes with people incessantly enquiring about Ngozi and if they are really lovers.

“There’s been a tremendous response to the video. It is not a comfortable situation at all because you may want to quietly go about your business but people recognise you and ask: ‘Bra, where is Ngozi?’ They even ask if she is my wife.”

Dwamena met Ama through a mutual friend when he put word out that he was looking for a ‘heavy’ woman to feature in a video.

The storyline in the video is about a man’s family rejecting a woman he is in love with because she does not fit into their conception of a beautiful lady. The man, however, sticks to his Ngozi since love comes in many shapes, colours and sizes.

“I liked her a lot the first time I met her. She is so down to earth and confident but I noticed those qualities when we started shooting the video. One needs to be close to her to discover how nice she is.”

Ama sells earrings, bangles, neck chains and other jewelry items in front of Frankies Hotel at Osu. She’s been there for the past eight years and is surprised at the instant stardom that has come her way.

“People now call me Ngozi everywhere I go and ask if Michael Dwamena is my husband. I told the one who introduced me to him that I didn’t know how to dance but he assured me I would be fine in the video. The song is nice and I did what was expected of me. I don’t mind doing more videos now.”

Apart from Ngozi, there are nine other mostly danceable tracks on the Owo Moti album which was engineered by Bodo Steiger, Zapp Mallet and Appietus. Samini is featured on a track called Mama.

Dwamena, who is based in Texas in the United States, made some name here in 1999 with his Tibidibi song from the Mene Wo Beye album. He is in town at the moment to promote the Owo Moti album which is his fourth outing on the Ghanaian market.

He has lined up some live appearances across the country and says the chemistry between him and Ama ‘Ngozi’ Charles have been fashioned into dramatic stage pieces that will fascinate all.
