Ofori Amponsah hits gold

Ghana’s leading contemporary highlife musician, Ofori Amponsah has taken over the Ghanaian music scene with his latest album titled “Odwo”.

Many music fans who have followed Ofori’s activities on the music scene have described him as Ghana’s biggest selling artiste of the moment, releasing hit after hit every year for the past eight years.

He is adored by numerous fans worldwide and has established himself as one of the forces to be reckoned with in the music industry in Africa.

Anytime Ofori releases an album music lovers rush to music shops to grab copies of the cassette or CD. His presence seems to be seriously undermining the sale of other albums on the music market.

Some of the hiplife artistes see Ofori as a threat to their musical career because anytime he releases an album the atmosphere in the music industry changes and everybody is seen with copies of Ofori’s works.

Many music lovers have fallen in love with his songs which they see as inspirational.

Some cassette hawkers in the Accra metropolis told DAILY GUIDE that sometimes they had to hide Ofori’s cassettes to pave way for them to sell other musical works.

Due to Ofori’s outstanding performance in the music industry certain Ghanaian music producers are trying hard to sign him on their music label.

Almost all those addicted to Ofori’s songs believe that his albums are exceptionally appealing because they see trends of their own love affairs in the message of his songs.

His previous albums are still topping the music charts across the country.

His ability to create appropriate imagery for the subjects of his songs is highly commendable.

He usually engages the use of flowery language, as in “Hello Hello”, in which he likens his lover to a dove and later describes her as Asantehemaa and himself?…as Ote Kokooso.

He uses Asante Twi extensively and occasionally chips in a couple of English phrases or words when appropriate.

Apart from releasing albums for the public, Ofori’s live stage performances also have earned him another accolade as one of the most thrilling artistes in the West African sub-region.

Ofori Amponsah appeared on the contemporary highlife scene on the wings of Daddy Lumba, with whom he produced the chartbuster “Wo ho kyere” on the Auntie Attah album in 1999.

He later released his own album, “Asew”, which he followed with “Otoolege”, his fourth release. Other albums produced from Ofori’s ‘music factory’ include “Me Pra Wo”, “Bo Ho Bio” and “Sardine”.

He has also collaborated with other musicians to produce chart-topping songs such as “Rakia” which he sang with K.K. Fosu and Kofi Nti. “Rakia” is the Number One song on many music charts.
