Hearts thrash Dawu

Accra (Greater Accra) 26 April ?99

A hat-trick by Ishmael Addo and two goals from Emmanuel Adjogu were more than enough for Accra Hearts of Oak to send away Dawu Youngsters 5-1 in their ninth-week ABC Golden Lager premier football league match, played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Joshua Kennedy scored the lone goal for Dawu in the 18th minute. Hearts, took the kick off, scored two goals in the first five minutes when Addo converted a fourth-minute penalty after Joe Fameyeh had been brought down by Saviour Osei-Kofi of Dawu in the penalty box.

A minute later, Adjogu received a pass from Addo, sneaked through Dawu's defenders and shot beyond the reach of goal keeper Isaac Zogah in posts for Dawu.

The unsettled Dawu defence nearly yielded to two more goals by Fameyeh in the sixth and ninth minutes, but on both occasions the striker's lob over onrushing Zogah missed the target narrowly.

Dawu then came strongly into the game and pulled a goal back in the 18th minute when Kennedy finished off a three-man move. But their recovery was short-lived as the Phobians made it 3-1 in the 30th minute.

Addo received a pass from Fameyeh and dribbled goalkeeper Zogah before planting the ball into the net.

Dawu's defender, Max Boli Kurankye, who was finding it difficult to keep pace with the trend of affairs, was pulled out for Amoah Tawiah in the 35th minute.

The substitution paid off as the experienced defender kept the Hearts attackers at bay till the break.

After the recess, Dawu brought on Asibi Nurideen for James Ali but it was the Phobians, who went ahead in the 48th minute through Adjogu.

A two-man move between Lantei Lamptey and Fameyeh found the midfielder, who shot into the net for Hearts' fourth goal. That was not enough for the Phobians, who earned a second penalty in the 60th minute for Addo to convert.

The Hearts' striker intercepted a pass in Dawu's half and in the '18' beat Zogah, who brought him down for the spot kick.

Addo elected himself to take it and converted it for his hat-trick and the fifth goal for Hearts.

Apparently satisfied with the score line, the Phobians decided to use the rest of the time to entertain the crowd but the visitors nearly got a goal in the 80th minute through a free kick from the edge of the box.

Chronicle Amadu's kick bounced off the Phobians human wall and the rebound found Eric Mbroh whose strike was scooped off the goal line by Hearts' defender Edmund Copson.
