MUSIGA Calls For Government Support

The President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Alhaji Sidiku Buari has reiterated his earlier appeal to the government to consider as a matter of urgency wavering taxes on the importation of musical instruments into the country.

This move according to him will encourage lots of musicians who are presently inhibited from importing instruments due to the exorbitant taxes to do so to facilitate their work.

The musicians will eventually be able to churn out more songs and also pay their income and other taxes in the process.

According to Alhaji Sidiku Buari, most old and young musicians have resorted to recording their songs by using computerised rhythms primarily due to the unavailability of musical instruments.

He stated that once the import tax exemptions on instruments are implemented, MUSIGA would introduce effective measures to ensure that unscrupulous persons do not take undue advantage of the system.

The MUSIGA President also expressed regret about the activities of pirates who take advantage of the hard work and sweat of musicians to make money while the copyright ownership continuously wallop in poverty and also called for stiffer punishment for such pirates.

He reiterated that the current punishment for pirates is not deterrent enough and rather encourages pirates to operate freely without fear.
