Meteorological Services explains weather pattern.

The Meteorological Services Department says the prevailing weather conditions in the country cannot be described as the El Nino weather phenomena. A seniour official of the meteor department told JOY FM this morning that unlike 1982/83 when the El Nino weather phenomenon first struck, bringing along a severe drought the present weather conditions are not likely to bring about drought. El Nino is an erratic weather phenomenon that causes rainstorms and floods in some areas and severe drought in some other regions of the world. The official said if the sea temperature continues to rise as it is doing the prevailing winds from the south would cause rain which could be heavier than last year's by the end of March running into April. According to the official, it is only after April when the rains don't come that it can be known if the weather is the El Nino one. The Volta River Authority has warned that it would be compelled to shut down its turbines completely if the April rains fail in the catchment area.
