Two Robbers Committed to High Court for Trial

Tema, (Greater Accra) 19 May, '98

Tema community tribunal chaired by Captain Philip Agbeyome on Monday committed two accused persons for trial at the high court on charges of robbery at Macbaron Hotel, near the Tema golf club in Tema. The plea of George Quaicoe and John Amewugah were not taken. The tribunal revoked their bail and remanded them in custody to appear before the high court in the first week of June. Inspector D.T. Mantey, prosecuting, told the tribunal that on March 22, 1996, while Mr Bukari Gao, a night watchman of the hotel was on duty, he was attacked by a group of men who forcibly carried him to a corridor. He said the watchman was gagged, blindfolded and his hands tied behind him. The thieves then broke into the bar and made away with 150,000 cedis and items including a tape recorder, assorted drinks, cooking utensils, plates, glasses and an ice chest, valued at 2.8 million cedis. The prosecution said upon a tip off, the two accused persons, who live in the same house at Accra Newtown, were arrested and when searched, items like coking untensils and empty bottles of some of the assorted drinks were found in their roms. They claimed that they bought them from a trader. gri
