GWSC to waive 50 per cent of community bills if ...

Agona (Ashanti Region), 25 Jan. '99 - The Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation (GWSC), has decided to waive fifty per cent of all moneys owed by local communities in the Afigya-Sekyere District, if the communities pay off the remaining fifty per cent by the end of this month. Mr Rexford Anokye, the Afigya-Sekyere District Chief Executive, who announced this, said the waiver was a goodwill gesture from the GWSC and the communities concerned should, therefore, take advantage of it. Mr Anokye made the announcement at a meeting of the Afigya- Sekyere District Assembly at Agona. The DCE said the decision to waive the fifty per cent of the amounts owed was also intended to ensure early hand-over of the management of all boreholes belonging to the corporation to the communities. Mr Anokye said to ensure the smooth functioning and management of the boreholes when they are finally handed over to the local communities, the GWSC has contracted the Community Project Support Services (COPSS), a non-governmental organisation, to identify existing problems with the boreholes. The DCE said no town/area council can make any bye-laws without the approval of the district assemblies nor implement any such laws without reference to the assembly. Mr Anokye, therefore, advised town/area councils to submit all their proposals to make bye-laws to the secretary to the assembly, who will then pass them to the appropriate sub-committee and later to the executive committee before final approval by the District Assembly.
