Primary schools and JSS to be provided with libraries

Bolgatanga (Upper East), 9 Feb. '99 --

Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in the Upper East Region are to be provided with libraries stocked with supplementary books to help pupils improve their understanding of the English Language and general knowledge. The books will include African Writers' series, Adventure, detective and romantic books.

Mr Francis Ayaaba, assistant regional director of education, inspectorate division, made this known when he opened a seminar for 14 teachers who are to manage the libraries at a two-day basic training course in Bolgatanga on the use, care and storage of the books. He urged the teachers to help their pupils to acquire reading habits and assist them to select the right books and advised them to take interest in reading to enable them to better assist their pupils.

"Even though there would be no extra payment for this responsibility, we teachers, should take it as our role in producing good quality human resources," he added. The book scheme is part of an educational programme sponsored by the Ghana Government and the British Department for International Development to raise the standard of education in the country.
