Amy Newman Still On Track

Can anyone stop Amy Newman? The Takoradi-based gospel music diva does not show any signs of slowing down after seven album releases. Currently, she has released ?Megya Me Nyira Mu? which has been warmly received by many gospel music enthusiasts.

Amy?s latest is a mix of highlife, salsa and R & B rhythms. It is a collection of familiar tunes and some brand new ones and the songs are spilt in Fante and English language lyrics.

Whether she is singing live or on record, Amy is received as someone who believes absolutely in what she sings.

On stage, she is a ?gospel bomb? and her very tall build and total stage presence virtually forces her live audiences to pay attention and listen to what she has to say by way of song.

And when the songs start coming it takes no time for listeners to be dragged along. A similar thing happens on this album especially when she revisits some of her earlier recordings such as ?Wo Fata? and ?Metow Ndwom Ama Jesus?.

Unlike many singers today, who would not dare do a voice solo without instrument accompaniment, Amy is very much at home singing away all on her own. ?Dofo Ben Na Okyen Jesus? is one of such songs on which Amy throws her soprano voice into full relief.

For listeners itching for a dance, the opener and the title song ?Megyaa Ne Nyinaa Mu? comes through as a foot stomping highlife whose melody continues to linger on the mind long after the dance is over.

Amy?s latest follows closely on the heels of her 2002 album ?Ma Metse Biara? which features the all time hit ?Okamafo Jesus?. How the new album will fare against the former, can be anyone?s guess.
