Newly trained medical doctors cannot immediately enter into the private sector. If after spending so much money and time to train them, if they are not employed, they leave the country for greener pastures. Check the Northern, Upper West and East regions and you find how Doctors are overburdened or unavailable. People talk about bringing in Cuban Doctors. Will the government pay them when they are brought in? As at now, about 2000 nurses and midwives are staying home unemployed. If there is no money to employ them, and no loans given to them to start their own clinics, why make them take loans to undertake courses? Things are just not going right in Ghana.

The MP was asking about Doctors who have completed housemanship training and are needed in the district hospitals but are sitting at home. The minister however gave the numbers of fresh doctors starting housemanship training. is it ignorance or intellectual dishonesty? Funny thing is, those house officers haven't even been paid for past 10momths. Ghana is becoming a joke. How can you train doctors and nurses have them sitting at home while healthcare is collapsing?

Exactly d point, lets leave politics out of this issue. The minister deviated in his answer. medical officers have not been posted. his talkin abt houseofficers which is an entirely diff issue.

The minister was on point. No Doctor who has finished housemanship is sitting at home now. The truth is these doctors even though posted in September 2014, they don't have salaries yet and their housemanship salaries have also been stopped. The various hospitals provide them with loans or salary advance monthly. If health insurance doesn't pay then the doctors don't get paid too. The MP she rather call the finance minister to find out when he will release cash to pay the doctors. The lack of payment makes them ran to private clinics for locum.

This is again an example of poor planning at a national level. Doctors are trained for 7 years. While training is going on, the Ministry of Health should equally be planning on where to place the new Doctors. It is inexcusable to have Doctors (whose long training was largely funded by the Tax Payer) sitting idle at home for even one day!!!!
Now, can anyone blame Doctors for departing Ghana after training?
Will it be fair for calling such Doctors unpatriotic???

The problem is that all the doctors want to stay in Accra and Kumasi, so if even this group is posted non will go to the areas where their services is needed.

It's very strange, and, in fact, beyond comprehension how gov't hasn't money to absorb the trained bonded nurses and doctors into the health sector, yet Mahama Ayariga sits in press conference in Prestea and talks about establishing environment police team. Will this team, when established, work for free? Will they be on gov't payroll? Does gov't consider that more urgent than getting doctors and nurses trained with taxpayers' money posted to health care centers and hospitals?
