I don’t know which part of Ghana you come from but in most traditions in Ghana, it is always the guest who rises to greet the host. One reason we are struggling is the fact that we have no accepted ways of doing things, so people create things as they go. The effect is the chaotic society you see in Ghana. This is harmful. We need to have ways of approaching things, whether through our constitution, beliefs or traditions. Even the animal kingdom has standards and procedures of doing things.

I respect your submission. But the point we are missing has to do with public/national events where the President has to be in attendance. Who takes precedence? If it is about a traditional function, then we all know it will be the host Chief who will take precedence. I do not think this issue should be a huge thing to deal. What I see, is the political twists and turns coupled with entrenched political stands attached to the whole issue. Some people are making reference to the Asantihene factor, what they have failed to appreciate is that he does not attend public /national events where he would be required to rise when the President arrives. Instead, he often delegates a Paramount Chief within the Ashanti Kingdom to participate in such events.

The president is the guest of the chief so it is the president who has to rise to greet the chief. It has always been the norm in Ghana. I am old enough to have witnessed all the heads of state of Ghana rising or walking to traditional chiefs to greet them and to pay respect when they pay visit to the area. The current lack of respect for our elders resulting in our youth not respecting anything is the result of our president not respecting anyone. It is a shame indeed.

The Office of the President transcends that of any local traditional leader. The elected President represents the Republic of Ghana in its entirety and not a partical sub region of the nation. A chief in one particular region has no authority in another part of Ghana because he only represents his area and tribal grouping. RESPECT MUST BE ACCORDED TO THE OFFICE OF THE HEAD OF STATE IRRESPECTIVE OF WHO IS OCCUPYING IT AT ANY PARTICULAR TIME.A sitting President is the one who travels abroad to represent Ghana.Chiefs of varying importance also travel abroad but only to represent their own "constituency" or for personal reasons unless they have been specifically mandated by the President to Represnt Ghana in some capacity albeit transiently. Late President Mandela of South Africa on several occasions showed his true statemanship by allowing Chief Buthelezi (an erstwhile rival and even foe) to act temporarily as President in his place when he Mandela was not in a position to deal with matters of state e.g when unwell etc.
THE PRESIDENT WHO OCCUPIES THE AUGUST (important, impressive) POSITION OF HEAD OF STATE MUST THEREFORE BE ACCORDED THE HONOUR DUE TO HIS AUTHORITY AND THE WEIGHT OF THE POSITION HE OCCUPIES. It is no coincidence that foreign Heads of State will normally only deal with the elected Head of States of another country.

I think this NDC professor has lost it all. Until now, I used to hold him with high esteem. My understanding of whatt the Chieftancy Ministry said, as a common Middle School Leaver (Form 4), was that at public events, all seated must rise to welcome and/or greet the President on his arrival at the function. He predicated this protocol on the article he quoted in the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana. The Minister never said that the Chiefs should rise to welcome or greet the President whenever he visits their Palaces. Prof Atuguba, don't Chiefs who for some reasons find themselves in Courts rise when the Court Rise is sounded? Again, don't Chiefs who go to the Parliament House for some functions rise when the Speaker enters? Further, when Chiefs and sub-chiefs gather at the palace for a meeting or something, don't they rise and/or sit in a manner signifying reverence when the Paramount Chief enters? Do they sit leisurely to welcome or greet the Paramount Chief? Now, NDC Prof Atuguba, do Ghanaians a favour by mentioning one single incident when the President visited a Chief Palace and ordered him to rise to welcome and /or greet him. You see how politics has made people to think and behave irrationally and foolish? If Prof Atuguba thinks that the provision of the constitution quoted by Chieftancy Minister is not enough, then I encourage him to amplify it by whatever means so that it can be understood by him and his likes. I never knew the Prof was that empty.

Prof, you are very wrong.
Nana, is the President of the land, read it, President of the Land. When he visits any chief in his palace, the law instructs him to pay obeisance to him by bowing and greeting and not the other way - where chief stands to greets - traditionally its not allowed.
Anywhere outside the remit of the Palace, if as a chief you are with the President in any public setting - during pleasantries, as a sign of protocol and respect, you as the chief you rise to accord the President of the land the respect due him. its your traditional land but not your seat of authority at the moment. The law clearly describes the President as the authority over every stretch of land in the country.
The chiefs you mentioned hardly do come out in public outing or and encountering the President in such cases.
When Otumfuo visited Nana at the Presidency in Accra, why didn't he sit during his speech but stood and read out his speech. Its respect, its decorum, its part of organised protocol and that doesn't debase Otumfuo or and Make Nana Addo superior.
You - simply do not want society to learn and grow - always pushing wrong narratives described in pettiness and idiocy.
Sit in your palace and if the President visits, you can sit and receive greetings - not in the public space. And a whole Doctor of Law, spewing lies, hate and misinformation just because you don't like Nana Addo.
Shame on you!!

They think once they become professors in their chosen fields of sudy they know everything. The President of the Republic (for the avoidance of doubt, I don't mean Nana Addo) is the First Gentleman and total embodiment of the people of Ghana. Why can't all able-bodied men and women give him him/her the honour of rising to greet him/her? We're showing respect and honour to the Office of the President of the Republic not just the occupant of that Office. What do we really lose by doing so? Do our respective statuses diminish by showing respect to the President?
