It is announced for the information of the Ghanaian community, especially the Christian community that the Annual Harvest of the Ghana United Methodist Church (GUMC), Bronx, NY will take place on Sunday. October 28th, 2007, at 7:00 pm. The venue is 1951 Washington Avenue, between E. 179 Street and East Tremont Avenue. This special harvest this year has the objective to raise funds to complete the renovation works on the $750, 000.00 chapel building acquired by the church in 2005. The renovation works designed to increase seating capacity from 300 to 700 is estimated to cost $2,225,00.00, including cost of pews, pulpits and audio-visual/musical equipment. The building will also include pastoral offices, a social hall, community meeting rooms as well as space for educational and cultural programs. Currently, the renovation works are about 70% complete. The GUMC was started about seventeen years ago by Rev. Jacob Owusu Sarfo with thirteen members. Places of worship have included Salem United Methodist Church in Harlem, Union Theological Seminary, Columbia University, NY, United Methodist Church, Washington Heights, NY, and currently, Tremont United Methodist Church, Bronx, where we share space with the host church. The need to acquire our own place of worship has been a long standing one. Members of the congregation, numbering about 500 at the moment, have made generous contributions towards the renovation project, and continue to do so. It is our prayer that this year's harvest will receive God's blessings and help the church to complete the renovation works as soon as possible. It is our belief that as first generation immigrants we owe it to posterity and to our God to complete this place of worship and education to the glory of His name. We invite every christian, and especially Ghanaians, to come worship with us on that day, and/or to contribute generously to this wonderful cause.
