The Embassy of Ghana in Washington D.C, recently adopted a theme "Economic Emancipation" for its activities in the US. The Ambassador, H. E. Dr. Kwame Bawuah-Edusei and his economic team have been touring continental U.S.A to galvanize Ghanaians in the Diaspora and to network with business entrepreneurs to invest in Ghana. The visit was also to create an opportunity where all Ghanaian businesses in the USA could join forces and become a network which will be a force to be reckoned with. In a rare show of support and boosting morale for Ghanaian owned businesses, Dr. Bawuah-Edusei and his wife were accompanied by a prominent Ghanaian in Philadelphia, Dr. Kwaku Ohene-Frempong - Director of the Sickle Cell Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Mr. Johnson Adasi .(Minister Counsellor, Trade & Investment) who toured two Ghanaian owned businesses in Philadelphia, PA; Gold Coast Market and S & S Discount Hardware Store, the only known Ghanaian owned hardware store in the USA. This historical journey firstly took place at the Gold Coast Market and the team had the chance to acquaint themselves with various Ghanaian products imported to the USA. Mr. Martin Karikari, CEO of Gold Coast Market welcomed the ambassador and his team to the store. The team became impressed with the variety of Ghanaian products on display. This made the Ambassador make a point to this reporter to put a spotlight on products such as frozen meat kept in a huge deep freezer so the Ministry of Trade and Industry will take a closer look at some of the Ghanaian made products imported to USA for consumption. The tour also inspired Mr. Karikari and other Ghanaians who had come to welcome the team. Mr. Karikari said ever since he had been in Philadelphia, he has never seen an occasion where an ambassador took his time and paying visits to Ghanaian stores. The Ghanaians with diverse professions who were present also concurred with Mr. Karikari's statement and praised the ambassador and his team for such an initiative. They said the journey has really inspired them and they appreciated it. They also had the opportunity to also become acquainted with their fellow Philadelphian and prominent Ghanaian; Dr. Kwaku Ohene-Frempong. Mr. Karikari then offered the ambassador some of his products as a gift. After leaving Gold Coast Market, the team visited S & S Discount Hardware Store, the only Ghanaian owned hardware store in the USA. The owner, Mr. Kwaku Asamoah is an experienced Locksmith who used to live in New York and moved to Philadelphia a few years ago and to start up his hardware store. He welcomed the team and showed them around the store. He explained how some of the tools work and also showed various car keys on display. Mr. Asamoah explained that he cuts various keys for home, offices and automobile. He also can assist with replacements for car or home keys missing. The ambassador was impressed with Asamoah's expertise and suggested these type of businesses were needed in Ghana. He continued that suggestions would be made to the government to offer assistance so that similar businesses are opened in Ghana. Mr. Asamoah also offered his sincere appreciation to the team for their historic visit and said it was indeed inspiring to Ghanaian small businesses.
