‘I prayed to die in my sleep’ - Ghanaian woman recounts horrific accident ordeal

A Ghanaian woman, Vivian Mawusi Gakpo has shared the horrific accident that changed her life completely. In an interview with Roselyn Felli, shared on YouTube and monitored by GhanaWeb on October 5, 2026, Vivian detailed how her nightmare began on October 28, 2019. According to Vivian, she suffered an accident on her way to visit a friend at Ashale Botwe, adding that the vehicle she was travelling in suffered brake failure, resulting in her losing the use of her legs. Vivian explained that she was on her way to visit a colleague, only for the visit to turn into one of the most painful experiences of her life. In fact, it was two minutes before I got to my destination when I realised the car had failed. We were in the car. Everyone was praying, ‘Have mercy, God, have mercy.’ That was the only thing I remembered. When I woke up in the hospital, I was feeling pain all over. “So when I woke up in the hospital, I was feeling pain all over. I tried lifting my leg and realised I was in pain. Then I wanted to raise my leg, and I just realised I couldn’t raise it. So I was like, ‘I can’t feel.’ I was shouting, then I passed out again,” she narrated. Vivian further narrated how the surgeon appeared to mock her when she expressed her faith that she would walk again before undergoing surgery. According to her, she did not fully understand what was happening at the time, adding that the only thing she wanted was for the surgery to be performed. She further detailed that the doctors made her aware that the surgery was only intended to help heal her spinal cord and would not guarantee that she would regain the use of her legs. “So the person who was supposed to do the surgery on me came. When he came, he said the same thing: that he had to do surgery on me and the surgery doesn’t guarantee me working again, but just for the spine to heal again. So I told him to do the surgery because I had faith. “...All I wanted was for the surgery to be done on me. When he said that, I told him that he should do his part and my God would do His part. And then he laughed.” Vivian also shared how the accident has affected her ability to pass urine. She explained that the severe injury damaged the nerves connected to her spinal cord, affecting her ability to feel when she needs to urinate. “So they told me that it affected my heart rate. The way it was supposed to be, it has changed because of the level of the injury. Then my lungs. I will not be able to breathe normally. So my breathing has slowed down, and they said I might experience shortness of breath. If your bladder is full or you want to pass stool, it will send a signal to the brain that you are full, so you have to do it yourself. But ever since the accident happened, the nerves that are supposed to send signals to the brain have been cut short. So when my bladder is full, I don’t feel it. Unless it itself says that it’s full, then it comes to itself,” she added. Further sharing her ordeal, Vivian recounted an incident when she prayed for death while she was going to sleep. “There was a time I was going to bed. I prayed to God to take my life in my sleep because it was too difficult for me,” she narrated.
