Two people have died and 14 others sustained injuries following disturbances that erupted during the celebration of a Yam festival at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, after the festival programme had ended.
According to the Bono Regional Police Command, “the disturbances began at about 5:30 p.m. at a location known as the Four Junction, as Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the traditional ruler’s palace.”
The Police said a gunshot was heard during the procession, triggering the disturbances.
“Two people died in the incident, while 13 others, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment.”
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The Wenchi Divisional Police Command has since restored calm to the area, with the Police intensifying patrols in Nchiraa to prevent further disturbances.
In a statement issued on Monday, October 5, 2026, the Bono Regional Police Command assured residents that efforts were underway to identify and arrest persons involved in the incident.
