‘It’s normal to blame the GFA for Black Stars struggles’ – Henry Asante Twum

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says it is understandable for the association to be blamed for the Black Stars’ poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Ghana have endured a disastrous opening to the campaign, losing their first two Group C matches and remaining without a point. The Black Stars opened their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast before suffering another painful setback against The Gambia. Ghana appeared to be on course for a much-needed victory after taking a 2-0 lead at the Accra Sports Stadium, but a second-half collapse saw them concede four goals and lose 4-2. Black Stars Coach Saga: Meet two AFCON-winning personalities linked to position The results have left Ghana bottom of Group C and facing increased pressure to revive their qualification hopes. Amid the poor run, the GFA and head coach Carlos Queiroz mutually parted ways, with the decision confirmed on Thursday, October 1, 2026. Asante Twum said the GFA understands the frustration from supporters and accepts responsibility for the current situation. “It is normal for the Ghana Football Association to be blamed for the Black Stars’ poor start to the AFCON qualifiers. No one can blame GPRTU for the team’s poor start. The GFA fully accepts the anger of Ghanaians, and I also admit that we are not in normal times,” he said in an interview with Kessben FM. He, however, was quick to reveal that the Association acknowledges the plight of Ghanaians. “But the leadership takes full responsibility for the current state of affairs. We cannot do everything alone because we will need the support of all stakeholders,” he added. Ghana will next face Somalia in a double-header, with both matches scheduled to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium. The Black Stars are seeking to return to the AFCON after missing the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
