Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has said the government is shifting its economic focus towards job creation, business growth and improved livelihoods after concentrating its initial efforts on stabilising the economy.
Speaking at a meeting with the leadership and members of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Forson said the next phase of the government’s economic agenda would focus more directly on conditions affecting workers, businesses and households.
He explained that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had indicated in its manifesto that the government would first devote significant attention to stabilising the economy before turning to measures aimed at improving economic conditions at the individual and business levels.

“If you look at the NDC manifesto, you notice that we said we will spend half our time to stabilise the economy, and then after we lock in the economy and we stabilise it, we move towards the micro,” he said.
According to the Finance Minister, the government believes the economy has reached a stage where greater attention can now be placed on creating decent jobs and expanding opportunities for Ghanaians.
“That is where we are going now. And so you’ll see us moving towards the micro economy where jobs, decent jobs, are created. So that is going to be our focus,” he stated.
Dr Forson said improvements in living standards, including access to decent housing, are closely linked to stronger businesses, better wages and rising household incomes.
He said when businesses perform well and workers receive decent salaries, households become better positioned to meet their basic needs and improve their standard of living.
“When businesses do well, and people get decent salaries or wages, they build houses that are decent,” he said.
The Finance Minister said the government’s broader objective is to build what he describes as a “New Economy” that rewards work, supports business expansion and delivers sustained increases in incomes.
He maintained that addressing challenges such as housing and living conditions requires an economy capable of generating wealth and providing workers with adequate and growing incomes.

Following the engagement, the Minister said the government’s next priority is to translate economic stability into tangible improvements in employment and livelihoods.
“Through the New Economy, we will grow businesses, create opportunities and put the Ghanaian worker at the heart of our economic transformation,” he stated.
At a meeting with our comrades, the leadership and members of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), I made our next step clear: turn economic stability into decent jobs and better livelihoods. Through the NEW ECONOMY, we will grow businesses, create opportunities and put the Ghanaian worker at the heart of our economic transformation.
