Make cybersecurity a leadership priority – BoG tells banks

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has urged banks to stop treating cybersecurity as merely a regulatory requirement and make it a major responsibility for their boards and senior management.
The BoG's Second Deputy Governor, Matilda Asante-Asiedu, said banks must put cyber resilience at the centre of leadership decisions as threats to the financial sector continue to evolve.
She said banks must also strengthen cooperation across the industry and fully implement the Cyber and Information Security Directive (CISD) 2026.
“There is a need to move beyond compliance and make cyber resilience a core leadership priority, supported by stronger collaboration and effective implementation of the Cyber and Information Security Directive (CISD) 2026,” she said.
She made the call during a workshop organised by the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) for board members and financial industry leaders.
The workshop focused on strengthening cybersecurity governance and helping bank leaders understand their responsibility in protecting financial institutions and customers from cyber risks.

The programme was also part of a wider banking industry campaign to fight fraud.
The initiative aims to encourage bank leaders to take a more active role in fighting fraud and promoting good conduct in their institutions.
Participants also discussed emerging cybersecurity challenges facing banks in Ghana.
During the question-and-answer session, board members and industry leaders shared their concerns and discussed ways banks can better protect themselves against cyberattacks.

The BoG said cybersecurity should not be left to IT departments alone, stressing that bank boards and senior managers must also take responsibility.
The central bank wants banks to consider cybersecurity when making important decisions about their operations, risk management and customer protection.
