Massive fire destroys shops, homes near Koforidua Central Police Station

A massive fire has destroyed several shops and properties in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, with the blaze reportedly affecting multiple structures near the Central Police Station. The fire broke out at the Jackson Park traffic light area at about 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, and quickly spread through a building that housed Kwaku Showboy Boutique, Mama Pee Collections and several residential apartments. The intensity of the blaze caused significant damage to the structure and its contents as firefighters battled for hours to prevent the flames from spreading to adjoining properties in the busy area. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the incident and deployed personnel to contain the fire. Fire breaks out in North Industrial Area at Avenor Footage from the scene showed firefighters working to bring the situation under control as thick smoke and flames engulfed parts of the building. A firefighter was reportedly injured during the operation after being struck by falling debris. According to a report by Citi FM shared on social media on October 3, the affected firefighter was receiving emergency treatment following the incident. The cause of the fire has not yet been established. There is also no official information on the total number of casualties. The extent of the financial losses and the estimated value of the property destroyed are yet to be determined as authorities assess the aftermath of the incident. Further details, including what may have triggered the fire and the full extent of the damage, are expected to emerge as the GNFS conducts its assessment and investigations into the outbreak.
