Watch as Ghanaian man is questioned by US bank before withdrawing $20,000

A Ghanaian man living in the United States has shared his experience of being questioned by bank officials before he was allowed to withdraw $20,000 of his own money. In a video shared online, the man is seen responding to a series of questions from a bank official as part of checks conducted before the large cash withdrawal was completed. The bank official first asked about his occupation and source of income. He explained that he works as a social media influencer, earning money from content he shares online. When asked what kind of content he creates, he said he mainly shares his lifestyle, including his work, travels, family moments and other aspects of his daily life. The bank official then asked him to review a form and explained that the process was intended to protect his money and ensure he was not falling victim to fraud. The questions became more specific, with the official asking whether he was withdrawing the money under pressure, whether a family member had contacted him claiming to be in danger, or whether anyone had instructed him to lie about the reason for the withdrawal. The man answered “No” to the questions. The bank official explained that the checks were necessary because of cases in which people had been convinced or pressured into withdrawing large amounts of money. The experience may appear unusual to some Ghanaian bank customers, although large cash withdrawals in Ghana can also attract additional checks. These may include confirming the customer’s identity, the availability of funds, the purpose of the transaction and other required banking checks. Customers seeking to withdraw large amounts of cash may also be required to give their banks advance notice, particularly when a branch needs time to make sufficient physical cash available.
