Ghana's digital economy cannot thrive without cybersecurity – CSA boss

The Director-General of the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), Divine Selase Agbeti, has warned that Ghana’s digital economy cannot grow sustainably without strong cybersecurity measures to protect users and their money. He said as more Ghanaians use mobile phones for banking, payments, shopping and other services, cyber threats could also increase. Agbeti made the remarks while delivering his address at the official opening of the National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2026 on Thursday, October 1, 2026. Cybersecurity is no longer an IT problem – Divine Selase Agbeti The 2026 campaign is being held under the theme, “Securing Ghana’s Digital Finance Ecosystem: Building Trust Through Collaboration and Cyber Resilience.” According to the CSA Director-General, cyber fraud does not only cause financial losses but can also undermine confidence in digital services and affect financial inclusion, e-commerce and innovation. He said the increasing use of artificial intelligence was also creating new opportunities for criminals to carry out impersonation, phishing and social engineering attacks. Agbeti said cybersecurity should therefore no longer be treated as only an information technology issue because of its wider impact on the economy and national security. He said digital trust must become a major part of Ghana’s digital transformation agenda. “There can be no sustainable digital economy without digital trust, and there can be no digital trust without cybersecurity,” he said. He also urged financial institutions, fintech companies, telecommunications operators and technology providers to strengthen their systems and protect customers against cyber-enabled fraud. “Protecting digital transactions would be critical to ensuring that citizens and businesses continue to have confidence in Ghana’s growing digital economy,” he noted. Agbeti called on the public to remain cautious when using digital financial services and to verify unexpected requests for money before taking action. NCSAM 2026 will focus on raising awareness about cyber threats and encouraging stronger cybersecurity practices among institutions and the public.
