'I was told my music wasn't for Artiste of the Year' - KiDi recalls early career doubts

Award‑winning Ghanaian musician KiDi has opened up about one of the most memorable moments of his career, recalling how he was once told that his style of music was not suited to winning the prestigious Artiste of the Year award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs). Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, the singer said he still looks forward to the TGMAs every year, not necessarily because of the awards, but because of the celebration of Ghanaian music, talent and performances. “I look forward to seeing all the talents in one place, all the songs that have taken over the year in one place, the glitz, the glamour, the stage performances and even the drama. Every year it brings drama, and I always look forward to it,” he said. Reflecting on the moment he was announced as Artiste of the Year, KiDi said his mind immediately went back to a conversation he had at the beginning of his career with an industry figure who doubted his chances of ever winning the top prize. ‘Ghanaians are sleeping on Darkovibes’ - KiDi According to him, the person told him that the type of music he made was “not for Artiste of the Year” and suggested that another artiste was better suited for that recognition. “They said, ‘As for you, KiDi, the type of music you do is not for Artiste of the Year. We’ll package you differently, but your brother is the one who does Artiste of the Year type of songs,’” he recounted. KiDi said that conversation kept replaying in his mind as he sat through the award ceremony, knowing he had a real chance of winning. “It was sad for me hearing that, but I had overcome that with all the work that I had done. Sitting in that moment, knowing it was a possibility for me to win, there was a lot happening,” he said. The musician admitted that the excitement of hearing his name announced as the winner left him overwhelmed, to the point where he cannot remember what he said during his acceptance speech. “I don’t remember anything I said on that stage. I know I said words, but I blanked out. The euphoria of being on that stage… I don’t know how to describe it. Being recognised for creating something out of nothing is just a surreal feeling,” he added. @kafuidey7 At the beginning of my career, I was told that my kind of music wasn’t the ‘Artiste of the Year’ type - @KiDi Check my YOUTUBE channel (@kafuideymc) for full interview #KafuiDeyInterviews #foryoupage❤️❤️ #viralvideo ♬ Still (Here) - Eric Sublett PAT/EBSource: www.ghanaweb.com
