Dear GhanaWeb: My wife lost her beauty after giving birth

Dear GhanaWeb, I married the woman I loved early last year. Before our wedding, she was already two months pregnant, and together we looked forward to building a beautiful family. Months later, tragedy nearly struck during childbirth. There were serious complications, and for a moment, it felt like I was about to lose both my wife and our baby. By God’s grace, they both survived, and I was grateful beyond words. However, the complications left her with a condition doctors call strabismus. One of her eyes turned inward, altering her appearance. We were told it would improve over time, and she was given medication. She completed the treatment, but more than a year later, there has been little to no improvement. The truth is, my wife was very beautiful before this happened. Now, whenever I look at her, I struggle to see the woman I married. It sounds harsh, but her appearance has changed so much that I feel embarrassed introducing her as my wife. I work as a branch manager at a large company and interact with many people. I also have political ambitions and hope to contest as an Assembly member in the future. I always imagined having a confident and attractive wife by my side. Instead, this experience has shattered her confidence, and I find myself withdrawing from her. I have spent money seeking solutions and consulted doctors, hoping surgery or treatment could restore her eye. Unfortunately, they say there is no guarantee it can be fixed and that this may be permanent. Lately, divorce has been weighing heavily on my mind. It’s not because I hate her. I still care about her and appreciate everything she endured to bring our child into the world. I would continue supporting her financially and ensure our child lacks nothing. But I keep asking myself if it’s fair to remain in a marriage when I no longer feel proud to be seen with my wife. If I stay, I fear I will make her unhappy because I already find myself avoiding intimacy and public appearances with her. Part of me thinks it would be better to let her go so I can find someone else, allowing her to live without feeling rejected by her own husband. Am I being selfish for wanting to leave my wife because childbirth changed her appearance, or am I justified in seeking a life partner I can still feel proud and confident standing beside? What do I do now? FG/EB All Mahama's Ministers Must Go — Lawyer Maurice Ampaw Source: www.ghanaweb.com
