Tragedy Strikes UCC as Final-Year Student Dies in Gas Explosion Days Before Graduation

Cape Coast, Ghana – The University of Cape Coast (UCC) community is in mourning after a final-year student tragically lost his life in a gas explosion just days before his scheduled graduation.

The incident occurred late Tuesday evening at an off-campus residence near the university. According to eyewitnesses, the explosion resulted from a leaking gas cylinder in the student’s apartment. Despite efforts by neighbors and emergency responders, the victim, identified as Miss Candy Osei Abora. succumbed to severe burns before reaching the hospital.

University officials and students have expressed deep shock and sorrow over the untimely death. The deceased, a promising student, was set to graduate this weekend alongside his peers.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for the UCC family,” said Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, the Vice-Chancellor, in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”

A candlelight vigil is being organized by the Student Representative Council (SRC) to honor the deceased, while the university has pledged support for the bereaved family. Authorities are also investigating the incident to prevent future tragedies.

The tragedy has cast a somber mood over the upcoming graduation ceremonies, with many calling for increased safety awareness among students living off-campus.
