Famous Ghanaian media personality Captain Smart recently provoked public discussion by drawing attention to the difference in transportation costs between the administrations of former President John Mahama and President Nana Akufo-Addo for the AMERI power plant.
Captain Smart claims that the Mahama administration reportedly paid $5 million, including all necessary logistics for the facility's first import and setup, to transport the AMERI plant from Turkey to Ghana. He asserted, however, that the Akufo-Addo administration moved the same power plant domestically from Accra to Kumasi, spending an incredible $35 million.
The $35 million price tag has generated a lot of criticism and charges of excessive spending, with some questioning why such a high amount is necessary to transport the plant inside the nation.
Given that moving the equipment was originally estimated to cost $25.5 million but ultimately increased to $35.6 million under the present government, energy analysts and public commenters contend that the cost discrepancy is too great to overlook.
The disparity has sparked debates about procurement procedures, transparency, and the need for the relocation expenses, as well as demands for more research into the factors that led to the project's higher budget.
