A police officer and an alleged accomplice were fatally shot after a failed robbery attempt in Ghana's Ashanti Region, according to a story shared by GHOne TV on Sunday.

The incident occurred on the outskirts of Kumasi, and citizens were shocked to find that a law enforcement officer was among the culprits.

The heist allegedly occurred late at night, when two armed guys attempted to ambush a passenger vehicle on a peaceful stretch of road. When the motorist noticed suspicious activity, he swiftly contacted a neighboring police patrol unit. Officers rushed quickly and confronted the suspects, resulting in a heated exchange of gunfire.

Witnesses described the situation as chaotic. "It sounded like a battlefield," one resident reported. "Everyone was scared; some passengers even tried to flee the vehicle."

When the gunfire finished, both suspects had been shot, with one being pronounced dead on the scene. Surprisingly, it was later determined that one of the victims was an off-duty cop.

Authorities are now looking into how the cop became involved in the crime, with allegations that more individuals may be implicated. A spokeswoman for the Ashanti Regional Police Command told the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing, underlining the significance of preserving trust in the police force.

"This constitutes a significant betrayal of public trust. "We will take every step necessary to uncover the truth and bring any others involved to justice," stated the spokeswoman.

Local leaders have already encouraged the government to step up efforts to combat corruption and restore integrity to the police force.
