A social media storm is brewing as Ghanaians react to accusations that Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of Ghana GoldBod and National Communications Officer for the NDC, bought a 2023 Rolex Datejust 41 Two-Tone wristwatch for more than $20,000 immediately after taking on his new post. The discovery, which first revealed in a post on X (previously Twitter), has sparked outrage over what many see as a worrisome display of affluence in the midst of national adversity.
According to the post, the high-end watch normally costs $20,499 but is now available for $17,090. The author of the piece went on to suggest that this cash might be used to build a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound, which is a critical facility for providing healthcare in Ghana's underserved rural villages.
The post has been widely shared and debated, with many pushing for greater responsibility and transparency from government-affiliated institutions. "A CHPS compound can serve an entire community, yet we're prioritizing luxury accessories," according to a user. Others questioned the source of the funding and wanted a formal statement from GoldBod.

Social media users have expressed their displeasure, questioning the optics and ethics of a public figure making such a purchase at a time when economic hardship and inadequate healthcare infrastructure remain important national issues. Critics claim that such expenditure, whether from public or private sources, represents a growing gap between political elites and the realities of common residents.

Though Sammy Gyamfi and his office have not issued an official statement, the episode has become the latest flashpoint in a larger national debate about leadership, priorities, and the apparent gap between public servants and the people they serve.
