The Ghana Police Service is making serious strides in its fight against robbery and murder, according to Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno. At a press briefing in Accra, the IGP shared some major updates that signal the force is stepping up its game.

Over the past few months, the Police Service has ramped up intelligence-led operations across key regions, including Western, Northern, and Greater Accra. Special teams were deployed to keep a close eye on criminal hotspots, and their efforts have already paid off—with several arrests made and a significant number of firearms and ammunition taken off the streets.

Breakthrough in High-Profile Murder Case

One of the biggest developments is the arrest of 32-year-old Abraham Awundok, linked to the heartbreaking murder of Dr. Jesse Amwa and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Amwasi, who went missing in April 2026. Awundok, who reportedly worked as an errand boy for the couple, is accused of killing them and making off with their phones, money, and vehicle before fleeing to the UAE.

But the long arm of the law caught up with him. An Interpol Red Notice was issued on August 30, 2026, and he was eventually deported from Dubai to Ghana. According to the IGP, the suspect has already confessed to the crime during interrogation, and investigations are still ongoing.

Bank Robberies Foiled, Gangs Dismantled

In other encouraging news, police successfully prevented planned robberies targeting banks in Accra and Tema. During these operations, two suspects were shot dead, and another was arrested at Labone.

Police also took down suspected robbery gangs operating in areas like Abofokrom and Manso. Five suspects were arrested, and officers recovered three AK-47 rifles and 357 rounds of ammunition.

More Arrests Across the Country

The crackdown didn't stop there. Arrests were also made in connection with robbery cases in Bufei, Tamale, Yendi, and the Kultor Market robbery and murder. Meanwhile, a suspect linked to a robbery on the Enyiresi Central Road was arrested, with a pump-action gun seized. In yet another operation, five additional suspects were nabbed, and eight AK-47 assault rifles were recovered.

What's Next?

The IGP has assured the public that investigations into all these cases are far from over. The suspects are currently in police custody and will face the full force of the law.

With a renewed commitment to intelligence-led policing, the Ghana Police Service is sending a clear message: violent crime will not be tolerated. It's a promising step toward safer communities, and we'll be keeping a close eye on how these cases unfold.
