For the first time, the Ga Mantse, King Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, traveled to the United Kingdom to join the Ga-Dangbe community there in celebrating the Homowo festival. This traditional festival, which celebrates the end of hunger and the blessing of abundance, was marked with colorful ceremonies that highlighted the rich culture of the Ga people.
A video of the event shared by Channel1TVGHA on social media shows the King seated in state, dressed in traditional attire, surrounded by joyful participants. His presence was praised by many as a historic moment, making him the first Ga Mantse to personally travel to the UK for the festival.
The celebration kicked off with a grand departure from Accra, where King Tsuru II was seen leaving the airport with a high-level delegation, including businessman Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan. The trip has been described as a meaningful way to connect with Ga-Dangbe people living abroad and preserve cultural traditions across borders.
Social media was filled with excitement as Ghanaians reacted to the videos. Some admired the King's initiative, with one person commenting, “It’s time for the Ga people to stand tall.” Others joked about the luxuries of his trip, saying, “Wahala for those without a private jet.”
This visit follows a trend of prominent Ghanaian leaders traveling abroad to engage with their people. Earlier, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, also visited the UK for his Akwasidae festival and other engagements.
The Ga Mantse’s presence at the Homowo festival in the UK left many participants with a sense of pride, underscoring the importance of staying connected to cultural roots, even far from home.
