Francis-Xavier Sosu, a human rights attorney and Madina Member of Parliament, has declared his plan to appeal Christopher Kofi Kyere Sorkpa's five-year prison term for car vandalism on December 18, 2024. After going on a rampage at a location in Accra, Sorkpa and another suspect were taken into custody.
Sosu made analogies to the 2015 case of Charles Antwi, who was imprisoned for ten years after entering a church where then-President John Mahama was worshiping with an armed weapon, in a statement posted on X (previously Twitter) on December 23. Sosu said, "God asked him to smash car windows." He then wondered how someone could be considered sane. He underlined the value of a medical evaluation to determine a suspect's mental health prior to their arraignment in court.
The MP emphasized the necessity for fair judicial procedures and voiced worries about the potential for mentally ill people to enter guilty pleas without legal counsel. Sosu demanded that the case be thoroughly reviewed, emphasizing how crucial it is to uphold justice and defend people's rights, particularly those who could be dealing with mental health concerns.
Sosu's remarks are indicative of a larger demand for more thorough and sympathetic approaches to justice, especially when dealing with those who may have mental health issues.
