Eight individuals, including the driver of a Mercedes-Benz sedan, died in a horrific collision last night along the Abuakwa–Sunyani road. The crash involved a VIP Jeoun Transport bus and the private Mercedes, both of which were severely wrecked.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Mercedes driver, suspected of speeding, attempted to overtake another vehicle but instead crashed head-on into the VIP bus, which was en route from Sunyani to Kumasi. The collision was so violent that the Mercedes was completely destroyed, while the bus suffered heavy damage to its front and roof.
Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but seven passengers on the bus were pronounced dead at the scene. The Mercedes driver also died instantly from the impact.
Photos from the site showed the red VIP bus with shattered windows, a caved-in roof, and debris strewn across the area, suggesting the bus may have skidded or rolled before coming to a stop. Police and rescue teams worked through the night to recover bodies and assist survivors.
Initial findings from the Ghana Police indicate that the Mercedes driver’s reckless overtaking caused the accident.
This tragedy highlights growing worries about road safety in Ghana and underscores the urgent need for better driving habits and stricter traffic law enforcement.
