In a significant overhaul of its vehicle identification system, Ghana's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has revealed plans to introduce new number plates omitting the year of registration. Instead, the plates will simply feature a regional and area code.
This update is part of a broader initiative to align with international standards and modernize vehicle tracking. A key component is a new digital system using Dealer's Permit (DP) stickers, which will allow the DVLA to monitor a vehicle's journey from its entry into the country through to its final registration. This system will record details like the owner's identity and date of arrival to improve control and reduce illegal activity on the roads.
Furthermore, the DVLA is enforcing a strict two-week deadline for registering newly purchased vehicles. The Authority believes these combined changes will enhance road safety, aid law enforcement, and streamline national data management.
