The Bono East Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who also serves on the party’s executive council, has disclosed an incident in which Bryan Acheampong, the Abetifi MP and a flagbearer aspirant, allegedly silenced the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), during a council meeting.

He explained that Bryan Acheampong was addressing the council about former President John Kufuor’s grievances regarding the party’s neglect when Chairman Wontumi interrupted, bringing up former President Akufo-Addo’s recent denial of reports that he tried to delay the NPP’s upcoming delegates’ conference.

In a July 15, 2025, interview on Movement TV, the Bono East Secretary recounted that Bryan Acheampong reacted angrily to Wontumi’s interruption, telling him to “sit down and shut up” and reminding him that he had helped secure his bail in a past case involving the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

“Hon. Bryan was speaking about President Kufuor’s concerns, urging the council to take them seriously. Chairman Wontumi then cut in to clarify that President Akufo-Addo never suggested postponing the conference. That’s when Bryan snapped at him, saying, ‘Sit down and shut up—I bailed you out.’ Whether it was a joke or serious, it wasn’t the right way to address the NPP Chairman,” he stated.

The Regional Secretary added that even if Bryan Acheampong was joking, such remarks would be inappropriate if meant seriously.

“If he was serious, that wasn’t the right approach. Helping someone in trouble shouldn’t be held over their head. Chairman Wontumi could have handled his legal issues himself, but the law required external intervention. Doing someone a favor doesn’t make them indebted to you forever.”

He emphasized that while the incident shouldn’t be exaggerated, he couldn’t deny it as a council member. “We’d like to think it was said in jest, but if not, it was unacceptable.”

It’s worth noting that Bryan Acheampong was instrumental in securing Wontumi’s GH₵50 million bail in his EOCO case, which involved allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. Acheampong reportedly used his properties as collateral for the bail.
