Ghana’s drive toward sustainable agriculture is set to receive a major boost as Eric Opoku, Minister for Food and Agriculture, prepares to commission a series of solar-powered boreholes funded by the Government of Canada.

The initiative, delivered in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, aims to provide reliable water access to farming communities, particularly in drought-prone areas where unpredictable rainfall continues to affect productivity.

The commissioning marks a significant milestone in efforts by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to promote climate-smart farming and reduce dependence on rain-fed agriculture. The solar-powered systems are expected to supply clean, sustainable water for irrigation and domestic use, enabling farmers to cultivate crops throughout the year.

Ahead of the event, Hon. Opoku highlighted the transformative potential of the project, noting that improved access to water would directly impact crop yields, farmer incomes, and food security nationwide. He stressed that investing in modern agricultural infrastructure remains key to unlocking the sector’s full potential.

Also expected at the ceremony is John Dumelo, whose growing involvement in agriculture advocacy continues to inspire youth participation in farming.

The intervention underscores the importance of international partnerships in Ghana’s agricultural development, while reinforcing government’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth within the sector.
