The Bureau of Internal Affairs (BIA), with intelligence support from the Revenue Intelligence Bureau (RIB), is calling on the President to order an urgent, independent institutional probe into allegations of immigration misconduct, extortion and cross-border criminal facilitation at Aflao and Sogakope in the Volta Region.

BIA/RIB intelligence reports raise concerns that some immigration officers are allegedly facilitating the entry of illegal immigrants into Ghana while harassing and extorting money from traders, travellers and Aflao residents.

Further investigations reportedly indicate that the Volta Regional House of Chiefs has submitted several complaints to the President and the Minister for the Interior concerning alleged illegal activities by immigration officers in the region.

The Bureau has also received intelligence indicating that more than 500 immigration officers are reportedly stationed at Aflao and approximately 150 at Sogakope. These figures require official verification, alongside an investigation into concerns about postings, supervision and alleged opportunities for illegal financial gain.

BIA/RIB warns that, if substantiated, these allegations could undermine border security, public safety, lawful trade and confidence in the Ghana Immigration Service.

The Bureau is therefore calling for an independent presidential investigation, a review of previous complaints, stronger monitoring of border operations and appropriate sanctions against any officers or other persons found culpable.

The President’s urgent attention is needed to protect Ghana’s borders, safeguard citizens and travellers, and restore public confidence in the country’s immigration system.

The Bureau emphasizes that all allegations must be impartially investigated and that due process must be respected.
