Rapper Tory Lanez, currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, is now at the center of a growing campaign calling for his release. In a surprising twist, a group of politicians, public figures, and celebrities are urging California Governor Gavin Newsom to grant him clemency.
Political and Public Pressure Mounts
Among the notable figures advocating for Lanez’s release is former New Jersey Assemblyman Jamel Holley, who recently submitted a formal petition to Governor Newsom. Holley described Lanez’s conviction as "unstable" and said granting clemency would "correct a grave injustice."
In support of that position, Jack Brewer, a former NFL player and White House appointee, emphasized the importance of Lanez’s role as a father. "This is another broken case," Brewer wrote on social media, "another father lost to a system that rewards headlines over truth."
Adding more weight to the clemency movement, U.S. Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida) also appealed directly to the governor, arguing that the case deserves a second look due to potential flaws in the prosecution.
Even Canadian superstar Drake entered the conversation, amplifying a Change.org petition pushing for Lanez’s pardon. The petition, which has gathered over 300,000 signatures, claims that key forensic evidence—such as gunshot residue and DNA—was either mishandled or not properly tested during the trial.
The Case and Controversy
Tory Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was convicted in 2022 of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, discharging a firearm with gross negligence, and carrying an unregistered firearm in a vehicle.
Advocates for his clemency argue that:
* New eyewitness testimony may cast doubt on who actually fired the weapon.
* The handling of forensic evidence was flawed or incomplete.
* Lanez’s behavior since the incident has shown growth and responsibility, particularly as a father.
However, not everyone agrees with this narrative.
Megan Thee Stallion Responds
Megan Thee Stallion, who was shot during the incident, issued a strong public response condemning the clemency efforts. In a viral TikTok video, she said:
> “Ain’t no new f------ evidence… FACTS ARE FACTS, he did it. TORY, PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE. TORY, YOU SHOT ME!!”
Her legal team has also spoken out, warning that attempts to rewrite the story could further harm victims of gun violence and set a dangerous precedent.
What’s Next?
As of now, Governor Newsom’s office has not commented on the requests or the petition. Tory Lanez is currently eligible for parole in November 2029, but if the clemency efforts are successful, his sentence could be reduced or fully commuted.
The debate over his case continues to divide public opinion, raising broader questions about justice, celebrity influence, and the U.S. legal system.
