From Accra Newtown comes a young artiste whose story is not built on overnight success, but on patience, self-belief and consistency. Known in music as Lamo XL, and in real life as Joseph Alamu, the emerging artiste is steadily shaping his path in Ghana’s music space with a sound that is energetic, flexible and rooted in pure vibe. His journey speaks to movement, growth and the refusal to give up.

Growing up with music and finding purpose

Lamo XL’s music journey began in 2014 in a very simple but meaningful way. As a student, he wrote his first rap and made it a habit to freestyle it on the school bus every morning. That routine soon turned into hunger. He wrote another song, then another, and before long, music became something he could not ignore. What stood out to him was not just the writing, but how dedicated he had become to the process. Through that dedication, he realised he had found his purpose.

A sound driven by movement and freedom

Lamo XL describes his music style as different, dynamic and full of life. For him, music is not something people listen to passively. It is meant to move the body and the spirit. According to him, you cannot listen to his songs and remain still. His sound keeps evolving, and that flexibility allows him to explore freely without being tied to one lane or expectation.

Exploring themes without limitation

Unlike many artistes who stick to one central theme, Lamo XL does not restrict himself. He explains that he is always exploring different sounds, and each sound naturally comes with its own theme. This approach allows him to express different emotions, moods and ideas as they come, keeping his music fresh and honest.

Rema’s influence and a bold creative switch

One major influence in Lamo XL’s journey is Nigerian superstar Rema. He credits Rema as the reason he moved away from rap and fully embraced Afrobeats. Seeing Rema’s freedom, confidence and success inspired him to explore more and trust his instincts as an artiste. That switch marked a new phase in his creative journey.

Creating from vibe, not pressure

Not every song Lamo XL creates is driven by a deep story or specific inspiration. Some of his music comes from simply vibing. He explains that certain songs were created naturally, without any particular moment or event behind them. For him, music sometimes flows best when it is not forced.

The search for a unique sound

At this stage of his career, Lamo XL is focused on finding and refining his sound. His goal is to create something unique, something that stands out and leaves a lasting impression. He wants his music to be recognisable, meaningful and capable of leaving a mark long after the song ends.

Consistency as his greatest achievement

When asked about his biggest achievement so far, Lamo XL does not point to awards or numbers. Instead, he points to consistency. After what he believes to be nearly twelve years of pushing, learning and growing, he has not given up. He strongly believes that with more effort and efficiency, his mindset and spirit can make him one of the biggest artistes in the country.

Working with 69 Records and finding motivation

Lamo XL is currently signed to 69 Records, a Ghanaian music label, and makes it clear that he is not an independent artiste. Being part of a team has helped shape his journey. What motivates him most is seeing people genuinely try to promote his music in their own ways. That effort reassures him that, at the right time, his music will reach the right audience and grow naturally from there.

Collaboration, learning and big dreams

When it comes to collaborations, Lamo XL keeps things simple. He vibes with people, they reach out, and he responds. He also sees himself as someone who is always ready to learn and explore, quick to adapt and open to new ideas. His dreams are bold. He wants to win five Grammy awards at once and sell out the O2 Arena, as well as even bigger stages, repeatedly and effortlessly.

Looking ahead with confidence

Asked about what the future holds, Lamo XL chooses his words carefully. He says little, but confidently tells people to prepare for him. Once he starts, he believes there will be no stopping him. As for advice to emerging artistes, he believes the answer lies within. If you truly know what you want, you will stop at nothing to achieve it. With time, he believes people will feel his journey, his music and his message more deeply.
