Former National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joshua Hamidu Akamba, has accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of deliberately attempting to frustrate the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on *As It Is in Ghana* on Rainbow Radio (87.5FM Ghana and 92.4FM UK), Mr Akamba alleged that the NPP’s approach to opposition politics lacks substance and is driven by a desire to see the current government fail.

According to him, while opposition parties have a constitutional right to hold government accountable, their criticisms must be grounded in genuine national interest rather than partisan attacks. He argued that the NPP’s current posture suggests an attempt to undermine every major initiative introduced by the Mahama administration.

Mr Akamba further claimed that the NPP’s track record while in government reflected what he described as poor management of the economy, adding that similar tendencies are evident in their conduct in opposition.

A key focus of his remarks was the government’s recently announced reforms in the cocoa sector. He stated that under the previous administration, cocoa purchases were largely financed through annual foreign-syndicated loans, a system he believes contributed to rising public debt.

He explained that the current government is shifting toward domestic funding mechanisms aimed at strengthening the sector, improving value addition, and reducing reliance on external borrowing. The reforms, he said, are intended to ensure fair pricing for farmers, enhance financial sustainability, and stabilize the industry in the long term.

Mr Akamba challenged the NPP to present alternative policy proposals if they disagree with the reforms, rather than dismissing them outright. He rejected claims from the Minority that the changes are designed to disadvantage cocoa farmers, insisting that the measures are necessary to correct what he termed past mismanagement.

On the matter of accountability, Mr Akamba maintained that the government remains committed to investigating alleged misuse of state resources by former officials. However, he stressed that any legal action would be pursued strictly in accordance with due process and the rule of law.

He assured the public that individuals accused of wrongdoing would be given a fair hearing in court, emphasizing that justice must be carried out within constitutional bounds.

The comments come amid heightened political exchanges between the governing NDC and the opposition NPP over economic management and sectoral reforms.
