President John Dramani Mahama is expected to meet with the Chief Justice, the Attorney General, and other key stakeholders to discuss what he describes as a “final solution” to the persistent mismanagement of public funds highlighted in successive Auditor-General’s Reports.
The meeting, scheduled for Thursday, aims to develop mechanisms to fast-track the prosecution of individuals and institutions implicated in audit irregularities, which have cost the state billions of cedis over the years.
Speaking at the 12th Annual Conference of Chairpersons of Governing Boards and Councils, Chief Directors, and Chief Executives organized by the Public Services Commission in Ho, President Mahama expressed frustration at the recurring financial infractions captured in the Auditor-General’s annual publications.
“Recently, I’ve been watching the Public Accounts Committee, and it’s so pathetic. Every year, we hear all kinds of reckless spending and mismanagement of public funds,” the President lamented.
“I have a meeting on Thursday with the Chief Justice, the Attorney General, and others to find a final solution to this. We must have a fast-track process so that persons found guilty of infractions face swift justice.”
President Mahama noted that the 2022 Auditor-General’s Report uncovered about ₵15 billion in financial irregularities, while 2023 recorded nearly ₵9 billion— evidence, he said, that Ghana’s audit implementation mechanisms are failing.
