A disturbing video circulating online shows social activist Ralph Saint Williams and a group of associates allegedly assaulting a nurse at Ridge Hospital in Accra on 18 August 2025. The footage has ignited public outrage and renewed fears about the safety of Ghana’s healthcare workers. In the immediate aftermath, the Ministry of Health released a statement condemning the attack, yet critics felt it did not make clear whether the alleged attackers would face arrest.
Among those critics was Dr David Tenkorang‑Twum, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA). In media interviews he questioned the ministry’s response, arguing that it lacked detail about police action against the suspects. His remarks were seized upon by the Concerned Nurses and Midwifery Association (CNMA) and some observers, who accused him of disrespecting the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
Dr Tenkorang‑Twum has rejected those accusations outright. “I didn’t insult the Minister, and I can’t insult the Minister,” he said. He stressed that he never named the minister and only questioned the substance of the ministry’s press release. In his view, the focus should remain on securing justice for the assaulted nurse.
The CNMA, however, issued its own statement labelling his comments “highly unacceptable and unbecoming of a leader” and urged him to exercise greater discretion so as to protect the image of nurses and midwives. For its part, the GRNMA has given the Ghana Police Service a 48‑hour deadline to arrest those responsible. The nurse assaulted in the video reportedly suffered a dislocated shoulder, severe headaches and other injuries.
While tensions simmer between professional associations, the broader issue is the safety of frontline health workers. Many are calling for stronger security at hospitals and swift prosecution of those who attack staff. Dr Tenkorang‑Twum’s comments crossed a line, the episode underscores how one violent incident can expose wider frustrations within the health sector—frustrations that demand more than a carefully worded press release.
