Adoato, Ashanti Region — April 19, 2025 — A man believed to be in his late 30s has tragically lost his life after being electrocuted while allegedly attempting to steal an earth cable from an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) substation near the Metro Mass Transit Station in Adoato.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, caused a widespread power outage across several parts of Greater Kumasi.

According to Benjamin Obeng Antwi, Public Relations Officer for ECG Ashanti West, the deceased was reportedly tampering with the substation’s earth cable when he was fatally shocked.

“This is yet another grim reminder of the dangers involved in tampering with live electrical infrastructure,” Antwi said in an interview with Channel One News. “These illegal acts not only disrupt power supply but also pose deadly risks.”

⚡ A Worrying Trend
ECG revealed that this is not an isolated incident. The company continues to grapple with a surge in theft and vandalism targeting critical power infrastructure, including transformers, underground cables, and substation components.

Antwi reiterated a plea to the public:

“We humbly appeal to individuals engaged in these acts to desist immediately. Such activities jeopardize lives and threaten the stability of power supply in the region.”

🚨 Police Investigation Underway
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has taken custody of the scene and is overseeing the removal of the body and launching a full investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, ECG engineers have been dispatched to restore power to affected communities as quickly as possible.
