Ghana’s Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has described his position as a dangerous and unappreciated one, stating that his relentless fight against corruption earns him enemies every day.
Speaking at the Constitution Day Public Lecture in Accra on Friday, February 28, Agyebeng highlighted the paradox in Ghana’s fight against corruption—while many claim to support it, they resist when investigations target them.
“The position of the Special Prosecutor is a very thankless job. It fetches you droves of enemies daily and brings you into direct contact with the worst forms of human debasement. Everyone wants to do their job, but no one wants the Special Prosecutor to do his,” he remarked.
He explained that his role often invites smear campaigns and attempts to undermine the credibility of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). According to him, individuals under investigation frequently push back, seeking to deflect scrutiny and avoid accountability.
Beyond the reputational attacks, Agyebeng revealed that his job comes with serious security threats, as some individuals implicated in corruption cases would go to extreme lengths to eliminate him.
“My security risk is ultra high, and I have to be perpetually on guard against attacks,” he disclosed.
Despite these dangers, Agyebeng reaffirmed his commitment to fighting corruption, insisting that he remains undeterred by the risks associated with his position.
