President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to tackle Ghana’s perennial flooding crisis by demolishing illegal structures built on waterways, wetlands, and Ramsar sites.

Speaking at the 2025 National Eid-ul-Fitr celebration at Black Star Square, he blamed poor urban planning and unauthorized developments for the increasing flood disasters in the country.

Tough Measures Against Encroachers
Mahama warned that his administration would take decisive action to clear all structures obstructing natural drainage systems before the rainy season worsens.

“The illegal construction of buildings in waterways is causing flooding and destruction of property. The rains are about to start, and already, we are seeing flooding because people have blocked rivers, forcing them to back up,” he stated.

He also condemned individuals who collude with some traditional leaders to acquire and develop protected lands, warning that such acts would no longer be tolerated.

“This reckless disregard for planning regulations and environmental safety is a major contributor to the devastating floods. Chiefs and individuals involved in converting Ramsar sites into built-up zones must stop immediately,” Mahama cautioned.

Strict Enforcement of Environmental Laws
The President assured that all offenders will face legal consequences and that the government will strictly enforce environmental laws.

“These illegal structures will be pulled down. We will not allow a few selfish individuals to endanger the lives of many. The law will be enforced,” he declared.

His remarks come as Ghana braces for the rainy season, with some communities already experiencing early signs of flooding due to blocked drainage systems.
