President John Dramani Mahama has announced that more than 5,000 young people in the Northern Region will receive hands-on vocational training under the National Apprenticeship Programme, designed to equip the youth with marketable skills and boost local economies.

The announcement came during a courtesy visit by the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, to the Jubilee House on Friday, June 13, 2025. The visit focused on deepening state-traditional collaboration and addressing development priorities in the north.

Mahama highlighted that the apprenticeship initiative, captured in the 2025 national budget, will be implemented in partnership with vocational training institutions and the private sector nationwide.

“The 2025 budget has provided adequate funding for the take-off of the National Apprenticeship Programme,” he said. “We’re partnering with vocational institutions and the private sector across the country.”

Target Sectors and Skills Training

The programme will focus on training youth in:
• Carpentry
• Tailoring
• Welding
• Shea butter processing
• Agribusiness

“These sectors are vital to rural livelihoods and local economies,” the president noted.

Linked to 24-Hour Economy Vision

President Mahama emphasized that the programme aligns with his administration’s 24-hour economy strategy, aimed at extending business hours, improving productivity, and creating jobs in areas like agro-processing, logistics, and community services.

“These efforts form part of our broader 24-hour economy strategy, which will provide new job opportunities and sustained economic activity,” he added.

Sustainable Development and Youth Empowerment

Mahama stressed that beyond reducing youth unemployment, the initiative is geared towards sustainable development, by fostering a skilled, locally rooted workforce.

“We are building a future where our youth don’t just seek jobs — they create value from the skills they acquire,” he said.
